Sand Dollar

Sand Dollar

Sand dollars are delicate, sand-sifting echinoderms that require a well-established, mature reef tank with a deep (3+ inches) fine-grain sand bed to thrive. They are specialized feeders consuming detritus, algae, and bacteria from the sand. Key care includes avoiding new tanks, providing ample sand area, and maintaining stable reef parameters.

Key Care Requirements:

Substrate: A deep, very fine sand bed is mandatory. They do not do well in coarse sand or gravel.

Tank Age: Only add to tanks older than 6 months. They require a high volume of organic matter (detritus) in the sand to feed, which is only present in well-established systems.

Diet: They are detritivores, filtering organic particles from the sand. They rarely need supplemental feeding, provided the tank has plenty of waste.

Environment: They prefer lower flow areas to avoid being washed around but need good overall water quality, mimicking natural reef conditions (specifically with stable nitrate and phosphorus levels).

Compatibility: They are peaceful but fragile. Avoid keeping them with animals that might pick at them, such as wrasses or triggerfish.

Large specimens 8cm.
